Providing Access to Transportation

The Ride United Network (RUN) program provides a temporary solution to transportation barriers that prevent the residents of Washington County, MD. from accessing healthcare, employment, and education services. Transportation has proven to be a key issue for many individuals seeking services to gain financial stability and independence. Through a partnership with Lyft and our sister United Way in Frederick County, Ride United offers round-trip, on-demand Lyft rides to connect community members to critical services such as education, employment, health care, and legal services.

Program Details

Ride Requirements & Rider Eligibility

Riders must be a Washington County, MD resident
Primary rider must be at least 18 yrs of age (under 18 must be with an adult)
All rides must originate in Washington County, MD
Rides must be for one of the six approved ride cases
Riders must provide their own car or booster seat for any children riding with them

Important Note: Riders must download and install the Lyft app BEFORE a ride will be granted.

Ride codes must be requested at least 24 to 48 hours in advance, as United Way does not operate as a 24/7 dispatch service.

Are There Program Limitations?

Yes, there are limitations. They include, but may not be restricted to:

Rider must be an ALICE* household as defined by the ALICE* Report or an individual with a military service history.
Rides must originate in Washington County, MD. Rides originating in other counties will be declined.
Rides are limited to two per week.
United Way of Washington County cannot schedule or dispatch rides.
Rides are free or discounted up to the value of each promo code. Any remaining cost beyond the value of the promo-code is passed on to the rider.
Rides cannot be used at a drive-thru site (e.g., fast-food restaurant).
Cannot be used for health emergencies (to the E.R. or Urgent Care).
Rider must be 18 years of age or older, or must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

*ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

ALICE lives paycheck-to-paycheck, earning just above the Federal poverty level, and struggles to make ends meet while living on a modest household survival budget.
